Spot the tractor - the proposed wind turbines would dwarf structures in the surrounding area!

1ST APRIL 2008...NEWS..NEWS..NEWS..NEWS 94% VOTE AGAINST EAST STOKE WINDFARM

At the meeting called by East Stoke Parish Council, only 8 out of the audience of 145 voted to support the proposed 6 industrial turbines 125 metres (410 feet) all - taller than Salisbury Cathedral. The meeting was held in the D'Urberville Hall in Wool, the only one large enough to hold the sizeable number of concerned residents. Residents from Wool, Trigon and Wareham had been invited, but some came from as far as Bournemouth. The standing room only audience heard presentations from Will Bond, the landowner, and Infinergy, the Developer, on the proposed plans. Terry Stewart, Chairman of Purbeck CPRE and Geoff Edwardes, Chairman of DART (Dorset Against Rural Turbines) gave illustrated talks on the threats from the Turbines. "These huge monstrosities will dominate the Purbeck AONB and the World Heritage Coast, being visible over much of Dorset" said Terry Stewart, "they will produce birdkill, cause noise problems and devalue local houses." The meeting was chaired by Barry Quinn, West Purbeck District Councillor. "The turbines are not efficient or effective," said Geoff Edwardes, "the wind is variable and only blows for 24% of the time to generate electricity, they always have to be backed up by a fossil fuel power station if the winds drop."

You will need to state in your own words, the impact these massive structures will have on this area, the environmental/visual/rural amenity the Purbecks afford and the other appropriate factors.

There is plenty of information about the lack of efficiency and poor cost to benefit ratio of this wind power station in beautiful Dorset. You can use the information on this website as a resource. The development is 2.5 miles from Wareham town centre and approx 2 miles from Wool adjoining Puddletown Road. It adjoins an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty {AONB}.

CHRONOLOGY

March 2008 - the planning application for the East Stoke wind-farm was submitted by Infinergy and local land owner Will Bond on Thursday 20th March.

In January 2008 a local action group was formed to oppose the destruction of rural Dorset and protect the outstanding natural beauty and wildlife of the Isle Of Purbeck.

December 2007 Infinergy announced their intention to make a planning application to build a Wind farm at East Stoke. It emerged shortly afterwards that the proposed turbines would number 6 in total and would be 125 metres high [410 feet] at Masters Pit. Shortly afterwards an application to erect an 80 Metre Anemometer [wind measurement mast] was approved by Purbeck District Council. At around the same time [before the mast was erected] Infinergy notified Purbeck District Council that they would be submitting an application for the wind farm in the next few weeks.

(First published on Friday 15 August 2003). Energy company "Your Energy Ltd." announced they would be running tests at East Stoke (nr Wool, Dorset) over the next 2 years before deciding whether to draw up plans for a wind farm.
