A Closer Look at the True Importance of Abstract Art – What Makes It Different
The importance of abstract art is discussed at length in many art galleries and museums. However, there are few people who have taken art for granted. They fail to realize the importance of abstract art as an art form that should be appreciated by all.
Abstract art is an artistic genre in which the appearance of objects in the real world is of no importance and the only importance is the effect of the appearance on the viewer. Many people confuse abstract art with abstract painting.
Abstract art is merely a kind of artwork, created in such a manner, so as to leave a strong impact on the viewer. While abstract art is completely different from abstract painting, both are related. However, they are entirely different from each other, and the appreciation of both of them is quite different as well.
It has been perceived in many ways that these two genres of artwork are actually one, and the same thing, but that is absolutely wrong. The popularity of abstract art has increased over the last few decades. This is because of several factors. First of all, the popularity of abstract art is directly related to the evolution of modern art.
Modern art, which includes abstract art, was actually rejected by many artists of the twentieth century. Therefore, since this movement occurred, more artists started creating more realistic paintings and sculptures.
Another reason for the increasing popularity of abstract art is that the medium of photography has made it possible for artists, even those who are not trained artists, to produce photographic reproductions of their works.
With the help of this medium, even an artist with no prior art experience can produce photographic reproductions that look remarkably similar to the original works of that artist, as seen here.
For example, if a photographer tries to make a realistic photograph of a work of art, he may come up with something so terrible that the results are hardly recognizable as the work of an artist. However, with the help of photography, even Picasso’s horribly distorted ‘raits’ of women can be brought into the realm of good and excellent art.
During the 20th century, abstract art became extremely popular worldwide. There was a big influence from the Cubists and during that period, even abstract expressionism was born. This type of art had only minimal influences from reality and was instead based on pure imagination.
It was during world war II that the abstract expressionist style really took shape. As the world war started, so did the creation of abstract art. After the war, there was a movement towards realism in the art world, and abstract painting was simply adopted by the so-called Modernists.
They rejected the overbearing nature of Abstract Expressionism and instead strove to have a more subtle style of painting. Some Modernist painters like Cubists Paul Gauguin and Pablo Picasso are examples of this movement.
However, the most influential American contemporary of modernist painting, Robert Rauschenberg showed a complete rejection of all over-the-top styles. In his paintings, he produced such shapes that they actually looked like simple drawings made by a child.
The avant-garde culture, he belonged to at the time also gave birth to the most notorious artists of our times, such as Frank Stella, Warhol, Gandaki, and Cezanne. With the advent of digital technology and printers, it has become possible to reproduce paintings in large quantities.
Thus, the modernists managed to make their visions come alive on canvasses that rivaled the works of the old masters. There is no doubt that abstract painting has played an important role in the shaping of modern culture. Today, there are still people who appreciate the fine art of Vincent Van Gogh and Georges Braque.
